Biological ecologists have been studying ecosystems for many decades, exploring (among other things) how nature manages the balance between consumption and sustainability. The class will explore the utility of the analytic tools of biological ecology when applied to industrial ecosystems. The concept of industrial metabolism is introduced by analogy to the metabolism of organisms, and its history and current status are presented. The concept of linking inputs, outputs, and byproducts of a network of geographically proximate firms will be used as an example of industrial symbiosis. Contemporary examples and research highlights are offered. Industrial symbiosis views industrial metabolism at the inter-firm level and also has a focus on business and community considerations.
