Resource scarcity is sometimes used as an argument supporting the idea of environmentally-responsible design. This class session will address considerations related to the availability of resources over times short and long. Considerations of governance play a major role in whether and how the ideas and concepts of industrial ecology are actually implemented. This session will discuss how industrial ecologists should be engaging with the governance community. What is corporate sustainability strategy? What does it mean for a corporation to be considered sustainable? How can progress be measured? Some of the attributes, benefits, and liabilities of various sustainable development metrics will be presented, as will ideas for defining and implementing a comprehensive, multi-level program to achieve sustainability. Where is industrial ecology headed? Is the concept of sustainable development an appropriate focusing device? What are the major research challenges?
